Support Legitimate Journalism

To preserve our democracy, we must defend and protect the Fourth Estate and First Amendment rights of people to speak Truth to power. The Mission of this huddle is to raise awareness of the Trump administration's efforts to destroy Truth by intimidating and undermining legitimate journalism and freedom of speech.

As Truth-seekers, this huddle will:

  • help people to discern “real” from “fake” news.

  • provide important examples of outstanding reporting and writing from legitimate news sources.

  • provide journalism resources.

  • encourage discussion about Fourth Estate and First Amendment issues and threats.

  • promote the efforts of investigative journalism to hold the Trump administration accountable to the American people.

Below are links to a number of organizations relating to this mission, as well as articles and videos.

The Poynter Institute is a global leader in journalism. It is the world’s leading instructor, innovator, convener and resource for anyone who aspires to engage and inform citizens in 21st Century democracies.

To that end, we teach those who manage, edit, produce, program, report, write, blog, photograph and design, whether they belong to news organizations or work as independent entrepreneurs. We teach those who teach, as well as students in middle school, high school and college—the journalists of tomorrow. And we teach members of the public, helping them better understand how journalism is produced and how to tell for themselves whether it’s credible.

ProPublica

The Mission: To expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions, using the moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing.

Presterity

The Trump campaign and emerging administration are in many ways unprecedented—and dangerously so—in American history. The volume of news and controversy generated is also unprecedented. Trump has often suggested “opening up” libel laws—a direct assault on the First Amendment and its protection for citizens. Presterity is a tool to be used in defense of those rights.
Presterity is a community project that grounds and orients citizens to the best available sources of information on a wide variety of related topics. Our mission is to document and inform, ideally limiting the damage Trump can do.
Presterity is staffed by volunteers. We accept no advertising and our funding comes from our organizers.
Presterity seeks contributions from across the political spectrum and is strengthened by information gathered by a range of observers. The only prerequisite is that a contributor be alarmed by Trump and his actions.
